Migration societies
A migration society can be understood as a society in which a) questions of migration are important for various areas of society and are linked to more general questions of social development; b) the (re-)production of migration and the associated negotiation processes determine social debates and (power-)political controversies to a large extent, which makes social lines of conflict visible, calls into question previous practices of political, legal and institutional control and (can) lead(s) to the (further) development of forms of governance; c) migration and mobility trigger self-reflexive effects that call into question traditional social self-awareness and raise fundamental questions of social coexistence or of belonging and identity, which (can) lead to processes and controversies of the normative self-awareness of a given society.
